A practical reference on aliquoting: what it is, how it behaves, what the literature reports, and where the honest uncertainties sit.
This page was last updated on 2025-12-03 and is reviewed periodically as new material appears.
Temperature logs and cold-chain documentation help identify excursions that may compromise a batch. Automated freezers, desiccant packs, and sealed containers limit moisture and frost accumulation. Aliquoting small portions before freezing reduces the number of times the main stock changes temperature. Labels should include peptide name, lot, concentration if known, solvent, and date prepared. Periodic analytical verification by high-performance liquid chromatography or mass spectrometry can detect degradation, truncation, or sequence errors that visual inspection cannot reveal.
Practical handling begins with an inventory record that links each vial to a lot number, synthesis date, and purity certificate. Before opening a container, allow it to equilibrate to room temperature to prevent condensation on the powder. Weighing or transferring should occur in a low-humidity environment using tools that minimize static and adsorption. Hygroscopic peptides may gain water quickly, changing mass and concentration estimates. Recording the container's initial mass and any visible changes supports later reconciliation of material.
Reconstitution introduces new risks because the peptide contacts solvent, air, and container surfaces. The chosen solvent should match the peptide's solubility profile, and buffer salts, pH, and ionic strength can affect dissolution and subsequent stability. Gentle mixing is preferred over vigorous vortexing, which can create interfaces and shear. If the solution is not clear, the cause may be incomplete dissolution, aggregation, or insoluble counter-ions rather than a simple concentration problem. Filtration is sometimes used, but filters can adsorb peptides and alter measured concentration.
Cold-chain practice relies on documented temperature ranges, calibrated monitoring, and minimized excursions. Shipments may use insulated boxes, phase-change materials, or dry ice, with data loggers to record conditions. Upon receipt, the recipient should verify the logger trace and place items into long-term storage promptly. Repeated warming and cooling during transfers can be more harmful than a single controlled excursion. For solutions, dividing material into single-use aliquots reduces the number of thawing and refreezing events and limits repeated opening of the same container.

October 5–10, 1908 - The rapidly growing, global industry and scientific quest for absolute zero led to the 1st International Congress of Refrigeration held in Paris, France, at the Paris-Sorbonne University, which welcomed over 5,000 participants. January 25, 1909 - From this first Congress, the International Association of Refrigeration was born, formed by delegates from 35 countries. June 21, 1920 - The association was reorganised and officially titled as the International Institute of Refrigeration – IIR (Institut International du Froid – IIF, in French). IIR's status as an international organisation was defined by an International Agreement signed on December 1, 1954, and General Regulations for the Application of the International Agreements signed on November 20, 1956. Since then, the IIR has been operating at its headquarters based in Paris and is now an international organisation for expertise on refrigeration. The institute has continued to run the International Congress of Refrigeration every four years since its inauguration and has now expanded its event portfolio to ten conference series covering a wide variety of refrigeration topics. Working alongside governments, today the IIR remains committed to promoting knowledge on refrigeration for sustainable development, and continues to provide key services to disseminate information on associated technologies to all stakeholders (companies, universities, professionals, etc.).
Due to the reduced water content of the freeze-dried foods that inhibit the growth of microorganisms and prevent enzymatic chemical reactions, these foods are considered shelf-stable and can be kept safe from spoilage for years by preventing the reabsorption of moisture. Freeze-dried foods can be stored at room temperature without the need for refrigeration. Although uncommon compared to most applications, sometimes a seasoning solution is sprayed directly onto ramen noodles to enhance their flavor, prior to being packaged. Powder seasoning packets may also contain anticaking agents and flow agents to prevent the product from clumping into a solid mass.
Alejandro Zaffaroni (February 27, 1923 – March 1, 2014) was a Uruguayan serial entrepreneur who was responsible for founding several biotechnology companies in Silicon Valley. Products that he was involved in developing include the birth control pill, the nicotine patch, corticosteroids, and the DNA microarray.
== Terminology == In 1901, Jōkichi Takamine patented a purified extract from the adrenal glands, which was trademarked by Parke, Davis & Co in the US. The British Approved Name and European Pharmacopoeia term for this drug is hence adrenaline (from Latin ad, "on", and rēnālis, "of the kidney", from ren, "kidney"). However, the pharmacologist John Abel had already prepared an extract from adrenal glands as early as 1897, and he coined the name epinephrine to describe it (from Ancient Greek ἐπῐ́ (epí), "upon", and νεφρός (nephrós), "kidney"). As the term Adrenaline was a registered trademark in the US, and in the belief that Abel's extract was the same as Takamine's (a belief since disputed), epinephrine instead became the generic name used in the US and remains the pharmaceutical's United States Adopted Name and International Nonproprietary Name (though the name adrenaline is frequently used). The terminology is now one of the few differences between the INN and BAN systems of names. Although European health professionals and scientists preferentially use the term adrenaline, the converse is true among American health professionals and scientists. Nevertheless, even among the latter, receptors for this substance are called adrenergic receptors or adrenoceptors, and pharmaceuticals that mimic its effects are often called adrenergics. The history of adrenaline and epinephrine is reviewed by Rao.

In Australia, iced coffee may include syrup, cream, cocoa powder or coffee beans. The café style is something like an unblended milkshake, and may be made from espresso coffee or only coffee flavoring. Bushells has marketed a Coffee and Chicory Essence since the late 19th century, as has Bickfords since 1910. There are many brands of packaged iced coffee consisting of coffee, milk, and sweetener. In South Australia, Farmers Union Iced Coffee has outsold Coca-Cola and is one of the state's biggest brands. Pauls "Territory's Own" Iced Coffee is popular in the Northern Territory and Norco Real Iced Coffee is prominent in Northern New South Wales and South East Queensland. Other brands include Breaka, Big M, Brownes Chill, Moove, Masters, Dare, Max, Fleurieu, Rush, Oak and Ice Break.
== Uses == Ammonium bicarbonate is used in the food industry as a leavening agent for flat baked goods, such as cookies and crackers. It was commonly used in the home before modern-day baking powder was made available. Many baking cookbooks, especially from Scandinavian countries, may still refer to it as hartshorn or hornsalt, while it is known as "hirvensarvisuola" in Finnish, "hjortetakksalt" or "hornsalt" in Norwegian, "hjortetakssalt" in Danish, "hjorthornssalt" in Swedish, and "Hirschhornsalz" in German (lit., "salt of hart's horn"). Although there is a slight smell of ammonia during baking, this quickly dissipates, leaving no taste. It is used in, for example, Swedish "drömmar" biscuits and Danish "klejner" Christmas biscuits, and German Lebkuchen. In many cases it may be replaced with baking soda or baking powder, or a combination of both, depending on the recipe composition and leavening requirements. Compared to baking soda or potash, hartshorn has the advantage of producing more gas for the same amount of agent, and of not leaving any salty or soapy taste in the finished product, as it completely decomposes into water and gaseous products that evaporate during baking. It cannot be used for moist, bulky baked goods however, such as normal bread or cakes, since some ammonia will be trapped inside and will cause an unpleasant taste. It has been assigned E number E503 for use as a food additive in the European Union. It is commonly used as an inexpensive nitrogen fertilizer in China, but is now being phased out in favor of urea for quality and stability.
=== Regulation by keap1/nrf2/are pathway === External (via chemicals) and internal (stress response or caloric restriction) induction of NQO1 is mediated solely through the Keap1/Nrf2/ARE. Keap1 acts as the sensor which loses its ability to target Nrf2 for degradation upon exposure to the inducers. Nrf2 is consequently stabilized and accumulated in the nucleus upon which it binds to the AREs and initiates expression of cytoprotective genes including NQO1.

== Signs and symptoms == Severe weakness of the proximal muscles (shoulders, upper arms, thighs) on both sides of the body, very high blood levels of the enzyme creatine kinase (CK) being released by broken down skeletal muscle, and persistent symptoms and CK elevation despite stopping the offending statin medication are the hallmarks of SAAM. Other forms of statin associated muscle damage (myopathy) usually resolve after stopping the involved statin. Mild joint pain and rash may be present. In people affected by SAAM, the median duration of statin therapy was 38 months before the onset of muscular symptoms. SAAM may affect people after long-term statin use even if they had no previous muscular side effects. A differentiating feature between this and more benign statin side effects is SAAM typically has a late onset. While muscle pain (myalgia) is seen in 9-20% of patients treated with statins, it typically occurs in the first month of treatment. SAAM has a later onset, occurring years after uncomplicated statin use. In some cases even after statins have been discontinued for several years.
This makes muscle tissue approximately 15% denser than fat tissue. Skeletal muscle is a highly oxygen-consuming tissue, and oxidative DNA damage that is induced by reactive oxygen species tends to accumulate with age. The oxidative DNA damage 8-OHdG accumulates in heart and skeletal muscle of both mouse and rat with age. Also, DNA double-strand breaks accumulate with age in the skeletal muscle of mice.
=== Flower === The flowers are usually found on thick stems rising several centimetres above the leaves. They are showy and grow up to 35 cm (14 in) in diameter. Some cultivated varieties have extraordinary numbers of petals. For example, the Chinese variety qian ban lian ("thousand petals lotus") can have between 3,000 and 4,000 petals in a single blossom and the Japanese variety ohmi myoren ("strange lotus") can have between 2,000 and 5,000 petals, the greatest number recorded for any species of plant. Lotus flowers regulate their temperature to within a narrow range, maintaining temperatures of 30–35 °C (86–95 °F), even with air temperatures as low as 10 °C (50 °F). Researchers think that this may be to attract cold-blooded insect pollinators to the flowers. Nelumbo nucifera is not closely related to other plants known to be thermogenic.

Work quickly in a dry environment and keep the container closed when not in use. Equilibrate sealed vials to room temperature before opening to reduce condensation. Record mass changes, as absorbed water can affect concentration calculations.
Liquid storage is generally shorter than dry storage because water enables hydrolysis, oxidation, and microbial growth. If solution storage is necessary, use sterile technique, appropriate pH, and cold temperatures. Aliquot to avoid repeated temperature changes.
Reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography is common for purity assessment, while mass spectrometry confirms molecular mass and can reveal modifications. Amino acid analysis or sequencing may be used when sequence information is critical. These methods complement visual inspection and storage records.
Allow the sealed vial to reach room temperature before opening to reduce condensation. Use a suitable solvent and gentle mixing rather than vigorous agitation. Follow the supplier's solubility information when available.
